ROANOKE COUNTY, Virginia. – The Backpack Run returns this year to support the Roanoke County Public Schools Education Foundation.
The mission of the foundation is to provide support for students and teachers in Roanoke County through teacher grants, student scholarships, and support for school system programs.
They rely heavily on fundraisers and donations from the community.
“Our teachers come up with fantastic ideas for exciting and engaging lessons. Sometimes it takes supplies, especially supplies, ideas and so teachers write for the grants the foundation gives out in the fall,” said Chuck Lionberger , spokesperson for Roanoke County Public Schools.
Lionberger says the more support they receive, the more they can provide to teachers and students.
There’s a 5K, a 10K and something new this year: an 8 mile in person. There’s also the Backpack Challenge, where if you complete all three events, you earn a fourth Backpack Challenge Medal.
You can do all the errands virtually and any type of exercise counts: running, walking, cycling or elliptical trainer! You can do a mile or two at a time and combine those miles over time to meet requirements.
If you’re running in person, the 9th Annual Backpack Race will be held March 19-20 in Greenhill Park. Lionberger says the course is flat, so you have a very good chance of getting personal bests!
