Biden touts $ 1.8 billion plan for families and education during stopover in Hampton Roads

HAMPTON ROADS, Virginia – For Kathy Blanchard and her family, her daughter Alanna’s free school meal program has helped ease the financial burden of the pandemic.

“It takes the stress out of the budget and feeds the kid and everything,” Blanchard said. “I know they get a healthy meal at school, where some parents aren’t even able to provide as much for the child. It’s good to know that they are getting a healthy meal. “

Many families across Hampton Roads struggle to get food on the table. The COVID-19 pandemic has only made the problem worse.

President Joe Biden estimates his $ 1.8 trillion Plan of American families will help level the playing field for families in difficulty.

The President and First Lady Jill Biden visited a fifth grade class at Yorktown Elementary School during a stop in Hampton Roads on Monday.

“For too long, we’ve had an economy that gives every cut in the world to the people who need it least,” President Biden said.

Biden’s plan would invest billions of dollars in nutritional assistance for children.

“These are all our children,” Biden said. “It’s the kite ropes that literally propel our national ambitions, so we have to invest in them, invest in our children to invest in the future.”

The proposal includes expanding and improving school lunch programs and providing food benefits to children during the summer.

If adopted, it could have a significant impact on food insecure children. In Isle of Wight County schools, a spokesperson said 40% of students were eligible and were using the free or discounted lunch program.

“With paying bills and all that has to cut the grocery bill by X amount because kids eat, their legs are hollow and naturally a free lunch will be less groceries than you have to buy,” Blanchard said.

For families like the Blanchards, the offer is more than a free meal.

“There are a lot of families out there who really, really need the help and every little bit helps,” Blanchard said. “One free meal, two free meals, and that’s not really… people see it as a free meal or a free ticket. It’s not. For the kids and audience kids who really, really need it, that’s it. “

This is only part of Biden’s plan; it includes several other proposals to help families. The plan will be difficult to pass in Congress. Republicans argue that includes more spending and taxes.

Biden also spoke about his $ 2 trillion infrastructure plan during his visit to Virginia.
