Genre TV is recognized in 2022 Emmy nominations, Disney+ is not

The 2022 Emmy nominations are out and genre TV fans have plenty to celebrate. But one of Hollywood’s biggest studios doesn’t. The House of Mouse will not be the center of attention at the 74th Annual Awards. Disney+ didn’t get as many major nods as the streaming site probably expected.

The Television Academy announced its nominees for the 2022 Emmy Awards early this morning. Succession led all dramas with 25 nominations. Meanwhile, Ted Lasso cleaned up for comedies, garnering 20 in total. You can view the full list on the Academy’s official website. But we’re especially thrilled that some of our favorite genre shows made the cut. These types of series wouldn’t have sniffed out recognition so long ago. Now, however, Breakup, squid game, stranger thingsand yellow jackets all earned Best Drama nods. And Melanie Lynskey (yellow jackets), Lee Jung-jae (squid game), and Adam Scott (Breakup) also got lead cast names.

Supporting nominations for the 2022 Emmys also went to Park Hae-soo (squid game), John Turturro (Breakup) Christopher Walken (Breakup), and Oh Young-su (squid game). And Patricia Arquette (Breakup), Jung Ho Yeon (squid game) and Christina Ricci (yellow jackets) also got supporting nominations.

(We are also delighted You better call SaulRhea Seehorn was finally nominated. It was long, long overdue.)

Meanwhile, What we do in the shadows made the list for Best Comedy. However, none of the cast, one of TV’s finest, earned an acting nomination for the 2022 Emmys. Laszlo was probably wearing that “dumb hat” when they announced the nominees.

If you browse through the main categories of Disney+ nominations, you’ll find them mostly on the animated side. What if…? earned a nomination for Outstanding Animated Series. Meanwhile, Star Wars: Visions also nabbed a spot for Outstanding Short Form Animation Program. As did The simpsons‘ Short ‘When Billie met Lisa.’ That means Loki, Moon Knight, Hawk Eye, and Boba Fett’s Book was excluded from the largest categories. They were only recognized in the technical categories.

Tough day for superhero fans, yes. But not necessarily an indictment of those shows or even Disney+. There are a lot of great genre shows on TV. And these days, they all rightfully deserve the recognition they’ve always deserved. We can’t wait to see who takes home the big prizes at the 2022 Emmys.
